b'Paula RegoPaula Rego (19352022), was born in Lisbon, Portugal. In 1951, to escape the dictatorship of Antnio de Oliveira Salazar, she was encouraged by her par-ents to go to finishing school in Britain, where a year later she enrolled in Londons Slade School of Fine Art. In England at the time, artists such as Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud were painting unidealized human figures, and Rego was fascinated by what she called the beautiful grotesque. She is known as a storyteller of dark, psychologically charged human dramas, ambiguous scenes often loaded with cruelty and sexual tension. She has been described as a Magical Realist.Revenge is a large pastel drawing showing a woman huddled in a flimsy tent or dressing room, her eyes closed, her hands clutched in prayer. Beside her a girl seems to be floating in space, her frowning face red with rage. The girl points a pitchfork toward the praying womanis she the womans daughter, seeking revenge for some wrongdoing ? Floating in midair as she is, she could also be a fantasy, a figment of the womans imagination. As Rego said, You can punish anybody in a picture.Exhibited in :Paula Rego : The Forgotten, Victoria Miro, London, November 19, 2021February 12, 2022Paula Rego.
